Mia loved exploring the rocky coastline near her grandmother's cottage in Cornwall. She wasn't afraid of the sharp rocks. She wasn't afraid of the crashing waves. But there was *one* place she had never dared to visit: the old, abandoned lighthouse on Raven's Point.
For twenty years, it had been empty. Yet, every night, the glass at the very top would mysteriously glow with a pulsing purple light. **Thump, thump. Thump, thump.** Like a giant, glowing heartbeat.
The villagers said it was haunted. But Mia was curious.
One evening, a terrible storm rolled in. The wind howled furiously and heavy rain battered the coastline. Over the sound of that roaring storm, Mia heard something incredible. Coming from the glowing lighthouse were voices! The melody was beautiful, but so sad—like mermaids calling from the deep, dark ocean.
Mia crept up to the heavy wooden door. She called out, her voice echoing against the cold stone walls. "Hello?"
The singing stopped instantly. The wind seemed to hold its breath. Then, a gentle, raspy voice whispered from the keyhole: *"Help us... please... before the light fades..."*
Mia looked up. The purple light at the top of the tower was flickering. Bzzzt. Bzzzt. It was dying out!
Mia’s heart raced. She ran as fast as she could to get her best friend Jake and his clever little sister, Emma. Armed with heavy flashlights and a thick coil of rope, the three kids ran back to Raven's Point. The storm was getting worse. Icy seawater was already splashing at the base of the door. They didn't have much time!
Inside, the lighthouse was pitch black. It smelled like seaweed and ancient dust. In front of them was a dizzying spiral staircase. Mia took a deep breath, and stepped into the dark.
Step. Creak. Step. Creak.
Suddenly, Jake froze. He pointed his flashlight up the stairs. A huge, hulking shadow with massive, jagged shoulders was plastered against the curved stone wall. It was swaying back and forth!
"Ahhh!" Emma shrieked, dropping her flashlight.
Mia grabbed it and shined the beam directly at the monster.
It wasn't a monster at all! It was just an old, tattered sea captain’s coat, hanging on a hook and blowing in the wind from a broken window. They all let out a huge breath of relief. *Phew!*
They scrambled up the rest of the stairs and burst into the glass room at the very top. The purple light was barely a spark now. Beside the giant glass lens, they found an old, leather-bound sea captain's journal.
Emma, who was excellent at reading old handwriting, dusted it off and read aloud:
> *"The Storm Sprites are trapped inside the lighthouse lens! Only children pure of heart can free them by solving the Riddle of the Seven Seas. But hurry—if the purple light goes out, they are trapped in the glass forever!"*
Below the warning, the riddle was carved into the glass:
> *"I have cities, but no houses dwell,*
> *I have mountains, but no trees to tell,*
> *I have water, but no fish swim free,*
> *What am I? Solve this mystery!"*
*(Can you guess the answer before Jake does? Think about it!)*
"It's a MAP!" Jake shouted excitedly over the roaring wind. "Maps have cities and mountains and water, but they're just drawings!"
The very second he shouted the answer, the massive glass lens began to spin. Faster and faster! **Whoosh! Whoosh!** The purple light erupted into a blinding flash that filled the entire room.

When the kids opened their eyes, seven tiny, glowing creatures were floating in the air. The Storm Sprites! They looked like miniature people made of swirling clouds and twinkling starlight.
"Thank you, brave children!" they chimed, their voices sounding like tinkling silver bells. "We’ve been trapped here since the great storm of 1903!"
The lead Sprite floated down and touched each child gently on the forehead. It felt like a cool, refreshing raindrop. "For your bravery, we give you the Gift of the Sky. You will always know when a storm is coming, and when the seas are safe."
Then, the Sprite pressed a small, heavy object into Mia's hand. It was an old brass compass—but instead of pointing North, its needle glowed purple, pointing straight out toward the dark, mysterious ocean. "For your next adventure," the Sprite winked.
With a final flash of starlight, the Sprites shot up through the broken roof and into the clouds, calming the raging storm instantly.
Now, Mia, Jake, and Emma use their gift to help all the fishermen in their village stay safe at sea. And every full moon, they visit the lighthouse, where their friends the Storm Sprites put on the most spectacular, secret light show in the sky.
But sometimes, Mia looks at that purple glowing compass... and wonders where it will lead them next.
