The Cardboard Rocketship

The Cardboard Rocketship

Zoom! Mia taped a big cardboard box into a rocket ship.

Her little brother Sam painted silver circles all over it.

"Ready for takeoff?" Mia asked, climbing inside the box.

Sam squeezed in next to her, giggling with excitement.

"Where are we going?" Sam asked, gripping the cardboard walls.

"To the Cheese Moon!" Mia said, pointing at a yellow pillow.

"Three, two, one," they counted together, loud and proud.

"Blast off!" they shouted, rocking the box side to side.

Whoosh! Past the couch stars, past the lamp-light sun.

The rocket wobbled through space, dodging a fluffy cushion asteroid.

"There it is!" Sam pointed at the round yellow pillow.

They climbed out slowly, floating like astronauts in space.

The moon felt soft and squishy under their sock feet.

"It smells like laundry, not cheese," Sam said, sniffing loudly.

Mia laughed. "Maybe the cheese is on the other side."

They hopped across the moon, bouncing in big, slow leaps.

A moon rock (really a sock ball) rolled past them.

Sam scooped it up. "A moon souvenir!" he said proudly.

They planted a small flag made from a drinking straw.

"We are the first kids to land on this moon!"

"Time to fly home," Mia said, checking her pretend watch.

They climbed back into their cardboard rocket, side by side.

"Three, two, one, blast off!" they shouted, rocking again.

Whoosh! Back past the sun lamp, back past the couch stars.

The rocket landed gently on the living room rug.

"Best space trip ever," Sam said, hugging his sock-ball rock.

Mia smiled. "Tomorrow we can visit the Chocolate Planet."

They climbed out of their rocket, tired and happy.

Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you imagine together.
