A big brown box arrived at Mia's front door one morning.
Inside was a new pair of shoes, wrapped in soft paper.
"Can I keep the box?" Mia asked, eyes wide with excitement.
"Of course," Mama said, smiling. "What will it become today?"
Mia flipped the box over and cut out two windows.
"A fort!" she announced, crawling inside with her stuffed rabbit.
She spent the whole morning guarding her cozy cardboard castle.
By lunchtime, Mia had a brand new idea for the box.
She flipped it upside down and added a paper sail.

"A boat!" Mia said, sailing across her imaginary bedroom ocean.
She paddled with a wooden spoon, waves crashing all around her.
After her sea voyage, Mia flipped the box on its side.
She drew big circle wheels with a fat black marker.
"Vroom, vroom!" she shouted, racing her cardboard car down the hallway.
The box zoomed past the kitchen, past the living room couch.
By dinnertime, the box was getting soft and a little bent.
"I think the box is tired," Mia said, patting its side.
She looked around for one more job for her tired friend.
Mia's cat, Whiskers, curled up sleepily by the flattened box.
"I know!" Mia said. "A cozy bed, just for you."
She lined the box with a soft, warm blanket.
Whiskers hopped in and curled up into a happy little ball.
"You gave the box the best job of all," Mama said.
Mia smiled, watching Whiskers purr in his new cardboard bed.
"Nothing ever really needs to be thrown away," Mia said softly.
"It just needs a new job, and a little imagination."
And the tired old box finally got to rest, cozy and loved.
