Pip and the Glimmering Acorn

Pip and the Glimmering Acorn

High up in the Whispering Woods, where the

sparkling morning sun danced through the trees, lived a tiny red squirrel named Pip. Pip had the fluffiest, softest tail in the whole forest and a little pink nose that never stopped wiggling.

Can you wiggle your nose just like Pip? Let’s try it together! Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle!

Pip’s home was inside a smooth, hollow oak tree lined with crunchy brown leaves and green moss that felt as soft as a warm blanket. Every morning, the sweet smell of fresh pine needles drifted into his bedroom, making him stretch his little arms wide with a sleepy yawn.

Today was a very special day! Pip was on a treasure hunt. He hopped out of his tree, his tiny footsteps making a *pat-pat-pat* sound on the branches. Suddenly, his eyes grew wide with surprise! There, resting on a flat green leaf, was a *glimmering* acorn—it was shining brightly, just like a golden star!

"Oh, wow! It’s the most beautiful acorn in the world!" giggled Pip.

Pip tiptoed closer, his smile stretching from ear to ear. But as his tiny paws reached out to grab it—*whoosh!*—a cool, playful wind blew through the trees. The branch gave a little shake, and the glimmering acorn bounced right off the leaf! *Boing! Boing! Boing!* It rolled across the wood and landed far away on the very end of a high, skinny branch.

"Oh no! My special treasure!" cried Pip, looking worried.

Pip’s knees gave a little wobble. He looked down at the ground far below, and his tummy felt fluttery. That high branch looked so far away! Just then, a soft weeping sound drifted from the next tree over. Peeking through the bright green leaves, Pip saw his best friend, Bella the baby bluebird. Her bright blue feathers were puffed up, and she had watery eyes.

"What’s wrong, Bella?" asked Pip kindly.

"I dropped my favorite silver feather, and the wind took it away. I feel so sad today, Pip," sniffled Bella.

Pip looked at his sad friend, and then he looked across the gap at the shining golden acorn. He knew that sharing his beautiful treasure would make Bella smile again. But first, he had to reach it! Pip *hesitated*—he stopped and waited for a tiny second because he felt a little unsure. Then, he patted his fluffy chest and took a deep, warm breath.

"Don't worry, Bella! I will get something magical to cheer you up!" said Pip proudly.

Pip looked at the branches leading to the golden acorn. There were three stepping-stone branches. Let’s count them together to help Pip stay brave!

One...

Two...

Three!

Pip leaped onto the first branch! *Hop!* It was bumpy, but safe. He skipped onto the second branch! *Skip!* Now, only one big jump was left. The high, skinny branch swayed in the gentle breeze.

"You can do it, Pip! I know you can!" cheered Bella, flapping her bright wings.

Can you flap your arms like little wings to cheer for Pip too? Flap, flap, flap! "Go, Pip, go!"

With all his friends cheering, Pip’s worry melted away. He squatted down low, wiggled his fluffy tail, and *jumped!* He sailed through the cool air like a little flying superhero and landed safely on the high branch with a soft *thud!*

"I did it! I really did it!" laughed Pip joyfully.

Pip scooped up the glimmering acorn. It felt smooth and warm in his tiny hands. Carefully, he dashed back across the branches to Bella and gently placed the golden treasure into her nest. Bella gasped, her watery eyes drying instantly as a radiant smile brightened her face.

"It’s so shiny! Thank you, Pip! You are the best friend ever!" chirped Bella happily.

Pip sat right next to Bella, feeling his heart glow with happiness. They looked up together at the *canopy*—the high, leafy green roof of the forest—as the afternoon sun cast golden sparkles over their toes. Pip realized that trying something new isn't so scary when you have a little courage in your heart and a wonderful friend to share it with.

The Moral:

When we find a little courage in our hearts to help someone we care about, even the scariest things become easier to face—and sharing our kindness is the greatest treasure of all.
